Intent on preserving Java's rich craft culture and its vital artisan income, Apikri Cooperative was founded in 1987 when 25 small handicraft producers joined forces with NGO activists. Apikri believes Fair Trade principles are critical to economic democracy, and the co-op helps artisans with micro loans, training in financial management, design and marketing skills, and access to international markets to sell their crafts. The cooperative is owned by its members, who hold management accountable and help to shape the organization's philosophy and Fair Trade principles. Apikri offers a social grant fund and remains active in environmental projects that promote reforestation, waste treatment, and conservation of vital Indonesian resources. Nearly 100 small micro-producers—many family workshops located in small rural villages around Yogyakarta—receive the benefits of the co-op today.
